They created red blankets over the ground and framed the scenery beautifully, often mixed with yellow, blue, and purple flowers. Like their yellow and red counterparts they like areas near water and open meadows. We found the above flower in the willow section of the Bierstadt-Sawtooth-Evans hike. We found this guy on the southeast face of James Peak at around 12,500 ft. This magnificent flower has beautiful leaves that turn red as the summer comes to a close. If you find one of these plants on your hike stop a moment and take a look at the intricacies of this organism.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/checkconnect.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/2013-08-03-15.53.05.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1599\" src=\"https:\/\/checkconnect.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/2013-08-03-15.53.05-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Queen's Crown\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/checkconnect.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/2013-08-03-15.53.05-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/checkconnect.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/2013-08-03-15.53.05-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/checkconnect.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/2013-08-03-15.53.05.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Queen&#8217;s Crown: <i>Rhodiola rhodantha<\/i><\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/checkconnect.net\/blog\/?p=1494\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pear Lake Hike<\/a><br \/>\nSubalpine to Tundra, August<\/p>\n<p>Queen&#8217;s Crown flowers look very similar to the Kind&#8217;s Crown flowers, however, the Queen&#8217;s Crown has more rounded flowers and is typically more pinkish than the deep red of the King&#8217;s Crown variety. Above you can see that the Queen&#8217;s crown liked the rocky area near Pear Lake and was only about 10 ft from the lake itself. They like the sun and have large flowers compared to their leaves. We found these flowers on the saddle between Grays and Torreys.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/checkconnect.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Cropped-Flower.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/checkconnect.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Cropped-Flower-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"Asclepias speciosa\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/checkconnect.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Asclepias-speciosa-flower.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/checkconnect.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Asclepias-speciosa-flower-300x267.jpg\" alt=\"Asclepias speciosa flower\" width=\"300\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Showy Milkweed:\u00a0<i>Asclepias speciosa<\/i><\/strong><br \/>\nHike:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/checkconnect.net\/blog\/?p=836\">Dinosaur Ridge<\/a><br \/>\nJuly, Foothills<\/p>\n<p>This flower is tall and has large bracts with many &#8220;showy&#8221; flowers. It seems to attract butterflies and we were able to view a couple different species on the milkweeds at Dinosaur Ridge. We found a number of these plants on our hike in the subalpine zone in our hike of Belford and Oxford.
